Types of Mufflers

Mufflers Types A muffler is a part of a car's exhaust system that is designed to reduce the amount of noise that an engine produces. Performance mufflers not only seek to reduce sound levels, but to also reduce back pressure. Adding a performance muffler to your car or truck can increase your engines performance and efficiency. They can also help to reduce wear on engine components, by reducing engine heat and boosting exhaust flow. Another advantage of a performance cat-back or muffler replacement is that it improves the sound of your exhaust, so that your exhaust note is more aggressive...

Exhaust Heat Barriers

Exhaust Shield Thermal exhaust barriers are used to block heat from the exhaust system from being transfer to a cars engine bay. The primary purpose of this heat reduction is to lower intake air temperatures and increase engine horsepower. But it also has secondary effects such as reducing heat damage to engine bay equipment and allowing the engine compartment to cool down more quickly. Preventing this heat exchange also has the benefit of raising the exhaust temperature and increasing exhaust velocity. Some exhaust heat management devices are heat shields, heat wrap...

Performance Catalytic Converters – What is it?

Catalytic Converter Question? If you have to replace your cat you have options. If your car is 10 years old or older and your local requires annual testing for automotive emissions to pass inspections, you may have already heard the words; you need a new catalytic converter. If you haven't, you soon will. Why not choose a performance catalytic converter? Catalytic converter facts and answers...

Performance Headers – Long Tube vs. Short Tube

Long Tube Headers or Short Tube HeadersWhen selecting the length and diameter of the primary tubes you must know your application well. Tubes that are too large will cause the exhaust gas to expand and slow down, decreasing the scavenging effect. Tubes that are too small will create exhaust flow resistance which the engine must work to expel the exhaust gas from the chamber, reducing power and leaving exhaust in the chamber to dilute the incoming intake charge. Since engines produce more exhaust gas at higher speeds, the header(s) are tuned to a particular engine speed or rpm range according to your application.

Finding and Fixing Exhaust Leaks

Exhaust Leak Whether you have a full aftermarket exhaust system or an OEM setup, no-one wants a leaking exhaust. A damaged exhasut can cause rough idling, loud noise, and sluggish engine performance. Some symptoms that your pipes may not be properly sealed include smelling or seeing exhaust or gas as you drive your car. In the case of a larger leak you may see large amounts of exhaust smoke bellowing from the engine bay or the sides of your vehicle. Big leaks, before the car's mufflers and catalytic converters, can make your cars...

Stock Exhaust Manifold vs Aftermarket Headers

Exhaust Manifold vs Headers Most people know that replacing their factory exhaust manifold with a set of aftermarket headers is one of the best bolt on upgrades they can do to their car or truck. But many people may not know that headers are built differently than OEM manifolds or that they offer benefits beyond just adding horsepower and torque. Nearly all new automobiles roll off the assembly line equipped with an exhaust system that serves the purpose of decreasing noise levels, reducing emissions, and transporting the exhaust gases from...

Exhaust Cutouts

Exhaust Cutout An exhaust cutout is a type of bypass valve that can be fitted to an exhaust system, in order to divert exhaust flow and allow exhaust to exit before it has traveled the entire length of the exhaust. Exhaust cutouts allow you to choose between the closed position, when the exhaust system operates normally and the open setting in which the exhaust is wide open. When the exhaust path is shortened, back pressure is decreased, making it easier for the engine to operate and leading to an increase in horsepower and torque. The biggest advantage of cutouts is that you can choose between...
